The Roman Catholic parish church of Damüls stands exposed above the settlement in the municipality of Damüls in the Bregenz Forest . The parish church , consecrated to St. Nicholas of Myra , belongs to the Hinterwald dean's office in the Feldkirch diocese . The church is a listed building .

history

On the site of a church mentioned in documents in 1392, a new building was erected in 1484 with the master builder and stonemason Rolle Maiger and consecrated in 1495. Between 1693 and 1733 the church was redesigned in Baroque style.

architecture

The Gothic church building with nave and choir under a saddle roof has a strongly sloping west tower and is surrounded in the southwest by a cemetery. The nave has a stepped plinth on the south side and two pointed arched windows, a round arched window and a small flat arched window. The chamfered pointed arch portal has a wooden sign for protection . A strong buttress is integrated at the transition from the nave to the choir, as are two buttresses at the head of the choir. On the nave and choir there is a continuous cornice at the roof approach. The apex wall of the choir shows the painted coats of arms of Austria and Montfort-Feldkirch. The west wall shows the year 1756. On the north side of the choir, a sacristy and vestibule are built under a pent roof. The tower has a Gothic square substructure with a baroque octagonal bell chamber with four arched sound openings and has an onion dome.

The hall room has a flat painted wooden field ceiling. The straight wooden gallery stands on two bulged supports. The drawn-in, chamfered, slightly ogival choir arch shows the coats of arms of Austria and Montfort on the inside. The retracted two-bay choir with three-eighth closure has a ribbed vault with partly chipped pillar services. On the choir vault there are maker's marks and the inscription 1484 roll maiger by roetis maister dis bus, renovated 1733: 1950. In the right choir wall is a niche with a triangular gable end and a chamfered wall. The choir has four pointed arched windows with tracery with stained glass by the painter Hubert Dietrich (1961), on the left Saints Anna, Ilga, Merbod and Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier , Abbot Franz Pfanner , Abbot Martin Greussing, on the right Saints Josef, Gebhard, Fridolin, Fidelis, Diedo, Gerold.

The basement of the tower has a narrow pointed arch portal and serves as a confessional chapel, the barrel-vaulted room has a window with the glass painting Pfarrer von Ars by Hubert Dietrich (1957), executed with the Tyrolean glass painting company .

The wooden field decker of the hall area shows pictures by the painter Johann Purtscher, in the 1st row by the choir arch from the left Engelkopf, Johannes Evangelist, Engelkopf, 2nd row Rosary Madonna with Dominic and Katharina, Assumption of Mary by Christ and God the Father, 3rd row Markus , Coronation of Mary, Lukas, 4th row Martin coat of arms Austria and Montfort, Antonius, 5th row angel heads, Matthäus.

The frescoes around 1490/1500 on the north wall show the Passion of Christ, 1st row Palm Sunday, expulsion of the merchants from the temple, Last Supper, Jesus on the Mount of Olives, the henchmen fell on their backs before Jesus, 2nd row Judas kiss, Jesus becomes Mocked, spat at and beaten, Jesus in front of Anna, Jesus in front of Caiaphas, Peter denies Christ, Jesus in front of Pilate, 3rd row Herod dismisses Christ, flagellation, crowning of thorns, Ecce homo, Pilate has sentenced Jesus to death, 4th row Veronica is enough for Jesus Handkerchief, Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross, crucifixion, Jesus dies on the cross, Jesus in limbo. At the choir arch the Last Judgment, to the right and left of the Lord sit the Twelve Apostles on the twelve thrones of the tribes of Israel, including angels blowing trumpets in the two spandrels, and to the left the choir of saints (with a canopy as a baroque addition), the Purgatory opens, on the right the jaws of hell. On the south side to the choir arch wall and window from bottom to top are the physical works of mercy. Between the two windows in their reveal Agatha and Jodok, Adoration of the Kings, below Georg.

In the sign is a painting Last Judgment from the 17th century.

Furnishing

The high altar from 1733 with a frame structure with fruit garlands shows the donors painted on the pilaster base on the left and the petitioning inscription by Pastor Gallo Rezler on the right. The high altar bears the clothed figure of Mary with Child around 1730, Magdalena on the left and Nikolaus on the right, in the essay God the Father flanked by two entablature angels, above Archangel Michael, all created by the sculptor Erasmus Kern (around 1630), from the former early baroque altar. The tabernacle with enamel pictures of the redemption through Christ was created according to a design by Hubert Dietrich, executed by Walter Grießer. The people's altar was created with evangelist reliefs by Fidel Rudhart (1901), framed by Anton Jehly the Younger, taken over from the former pulpit.

The left side altar carried a crucifix with wounds around 1680, the figure Theodul around 1470 was on the right side altar, both are in safekeeping. The former high altar group Coronation of Mary and Salvator by Ivo Strigel around 1500 is in custody. The plague altar on the left nave wall by Erasmus Kern (1630) bears figures in the middle Sebastian, left Theodul, right Jodok, in the niche Rochus, above a crucifix, on the side of the gable pedestals Maria, right Johannes.

The sacrament house in the second choir bay on the left was created by Rolle Maiger with the stonemason's mark and the year 1487.

The first organ was built by Anton Behmann in 1874 . There is a bell from 1459.

There is the portrait of Pastor Franz Schmidinger (died 1921) painted by Florus Scheel (1921).
