Josef Abel (composer)

Josef Abel (born March 22, 1929 in Deronje (now part of Odžaci ), Yugoslavia (now Serbia )) is an Austrian composer and arranger in the field of brass music . He worked as a teacher.

Life

Josef Abel was born in Yugoslavia. Due to his German ancestry, he was forced to flee after the Second World War and came to Vorarlberg in 1945 . First he was in Warth , then in Langen near Bregenz , where he worked as an agricultural assistant. As a late-career worker, he completed the teacher training college in Feldkirch from 1949 to 1954 , where he also received his musical training from Wilhelm Schosland, Franz Howorka and Rudolf Mayer . He took further training in brass music with Leo Ertl, Herbert König and Sepp Tanzer .

Abel headed the Damüls elementary school from 1954 to 1990 . In 1978 he founded Bergwald-Verlag , later renamed Musikverlag Abel , which his son Dietmar took over. In addition, he was Kapellmeister of the Musikverein Alpenklänge Damüls from 1960 to 1996 , led a choir for 40 years and initiated a theater group . He has been the organist in Damüls since 1954 and was a member of the municipal council and at times deputy mayor. He also works on a voluntary basis in the Vorarlberger Volksliedwerk and was director of the Bregenzerwald Music School.

Josef Abel has been married since 1955 and has three sons and a daughter. He lives in the Damüls district of Uga .
