Christian Gantner (born September 18, 1980 in Bludenz ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). Gantner has been a member of the Vorarlberg state government since 2018 as a regional councilor . Before that, he was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament from 2014 to 2018 and mayor of his home municipality Dalaas from 2005 to 2018 .

education and profession

Christian Gantner was born on September 18, 1980 as the son of Johann and Berta Gantner in the district capital Bludenz and grew up in Wald am Arlberg, a district of the municipality of Dalaas in Klostertal . There he attended elementary school from 1987 to 1991 and then from 1991 to 1995 the secondary school in the neighboring community of Innerbraz . From 1995 Gantner went to the Hohenems Agricultural School , which he graduated as a skilled agricultural worker in 1998 . He then began an apprenticeship as a carpenter at the Leu joinery in Wald am Arlberg. Gantner completed this in 2000 with the journeyman's examination.

After apprenticeship Christian Gantner moved in 2000 for military service in the Austrian army in the Walgau barracks in Bludesch and worked after its conclusion from the year 2001 as a journeyman carpenter in his training company in Wald am Arlberg. In 2005 he made a short-term move to Vienna to work as a parliamentary assistant. After the election as mayor of Dalaas in 2005, Gantner held this office full-time. In addition to his work as mayor, Christian Gantner also worked professionally as managing director of the Klostertaler Bergbahnen from January 1, 2013 until he joined the state parliament in October 2014 .

Political activity

From a political perspective, Christian Gantner initially worked from April to December 2005 as a member of parliament for Norbert Sieber , member of the National Council of Vorarlberg . In March 2005, he was also elected to the municipal council of Dalaas in the municipal council election. On December 4, 2005, Gantner took over the post of mayor of the community of Dalaas after an early new mayor election due to the resignation of Mayor Oswald Wachter. When he took office, at the age of 25, he was Austria's youngest mayor.

After the state elections in 2009 , Christian Gantner also acted as a substitute member of the Austrian Federal Council . In the 2014 state elections , Gantner finally succeeded in gaining a basic mandate through an intensive preferential vote campaign in the Bludenz constituency , whereby he became a member of the state parliament for the Vorarlberg People's Party for the first time with the inauguration of the 30th Vorarlberg state parliament on October 15, 2014 . He was subsequently chairman of the agricultural committee in the state parliament and area spokesman for the ÖVP state parliament club for energy, water management and community politics.

After the previous Agriculture and Security Councilor Erich Schwärzler announced his resignation from government office at the beginning of April 2018 , Christian Gantner was presented as his designated successor. In the state parliament session on April 11, 2018, the Vorarlberg state parliament elected Christian Gantner as a new member of the Vorarlberg state government . 28 out of 36 MPs voted for him. His areas of responsibility as regional councilor in the Wallner II regional government included agriculture and forestry, internal affairs, security and integration, water protection and water management, energy autonomy and energy-related issues of climate protection, veterinary matters, animal welfare, hunting and fishing, torrent and avalanche control and the disaster fund. Gantner's state parliament mandate was taken over by the previous mayor of Thuringia , Harald Witwer . After the state elections in Vorarlberg in 2019 , Christian Gantner was re-elected as state councilor by the Vorarlberg state parliament and his previous department was expanded to include tourism agendas.

Private life

Christian Gantner is married and has three children. He lives with his family in the Dalaas district of Wald am Arlberg . The NEOS co- founder and party leader Matthias Strolz , who also comes from Wald, is his cousin.
