The Walgau barracks are located in the Gais district of the Bludesch community in Vorarlberg . The barracks of the Austrian Armed Forces serve the Jägerbataillon 23 (JgB 23) as the headquarters and garrison location. The barracks is named after the valley in which it is located, the Walgau .

history

The Walgau barracks were built from 1986 to 1989. According to the original plans, the barracks should be closed by the end of 2016. In March 2016, however, these plans by the Ministry of Defense were rejected, so that the Walgau barracks will be preserved.

The battalion command, the first Jäger company, the combat support company and the headquarters company of Jäger Battalion 23 (JgB 23) are housed in the barracks . In addition, parts of the Vorarlberg military command are also located in the barracks along with the operational supply relay. The maintenance of the buildings is the responsibility of the army building administration , the operation of the canteen kitchen and the non-commissioned officers and officers' fairs of the company supply team.

The buildings of the barracks complex are located between the Rheintal / Walgau Autobahn (A14) and Walgaustraße (L50) on the municipality boundary with the municipality of Schlins in the Gais district of Bludesch. The almost 9.3 hectare site has its own access road that runs parallel to the autobahn and is known as Brigadier-Herbert-Tschamonstrasse in the local road network. Herbert Tschamon was the first commander of the Jäger Battalion 23 when it was founded in 1999 (as part of the army reform). Barracks commander is the current commander of Jäger Battalion 23, currently Lieutenant Colonel Stefan Schneider.
