Aegidius Mayer

Aegydius Mayer , actually: Josef Aegydius Mayer , (born May 31, 1857 in Schwarzenberg ; † January 23, 1935 in Schruns ) was an Austrian politician ( CSP ) and dean. From 1902 to 1919 he was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament .

education and profession

Mayer first attended the Mehrerau grammar school and then graduated from the state grammar school in Brixen. He subsequently entered the Brixen seminary and was ordained a priest on July 23, 1882. From 1882 he was employed as a parish provisional in Gaißau and then from 1883 to 1886 an expositus in Dornbirn-Oberdorf. In 1886 he moved to Lech as a parish provisional officer, where he became pastor in 1888. Mayer stayed in Lech until 1892 and then moved to Schruns as a pastor in 1892. In addition, from 1892 he was an editor at the Vorarlberger Volksblatt . Mayer worked as a pastor in Schruns until 1933, and in 1908 he also took over the position of dean in the Montafon dean's office .

Politics and functions

Mayer became a member of the Christian Social Party and ran in the regional elections in Vorarlberg in 1902 for the Christian Social Party in the constituency of the rural communities for the constituency of Bludenz and Montafon. He won the election and was sworn in as a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament in 1902, where he was a member of the state parliament until 1919. However, the state parliament was not convened between 1914 and 1918 after the outbreak of the First World War. Mayer was sworn in again on November 3, 1918 as a member of the provisional Vorarlberg state assembly and was a member of the provisional state assembly until June 16, 1919.

In addition to his political activities, Mayer was the founder of the Marian Congregation for Virgin Mary in Schruns and founder of the Catholic Reich Association. He was a member of the Vorarlberger Landesmuseumsverein and was a member of the CV student association “Austria”. In addition, from 1892 he became an editor of the Vorarlberger Volksblatt and the Volkskalender.

Private

Aegydius Mayer was born the son of the Schwarzenberg farmer Alex Konrad Mayer (1814–1886) and his wife Maria Katharina Mayer (1816–1886).
