Franz Marent

Franz Marent (born May 18, 1890 in Schruns ; † February 12, 1978 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( CS / ÖVP ) and professional soldier. He was mayor of Schruns and from 1957 to 1959 member of the Vorarlberg state parliament .

education and profession

After finishing primary school in Schruns, Marent attended the Feldkirch State High School. He was a worker in the Mayer sheep's wool factory in Schruns until 1911 and then served between 1911 and 1914 in the Imperial and Royal Rifle Regiment "Bozen" No. II in Riva del Garda . After the outbreak of the First World War, Marent served in Russia and South Tyrol until 1918. On January 1, 1919, he was made a lieutenant in the People's Army and was in command of the People's Army Platoon Schruns and the People's Army Company Bludenz. He then served from 1920 to 1936 in the Alpine Jäger Battalion No. 4 in Bregenz and was promoted to first lieutenant on February 1, 1921. Between 1921 and 1923 he graduated from the Army Officer Schools in Vienna and Enns. In 1936 Marent became captain and commandant of the garrison at Gayenhofen Castle in Bludenz. He was retired in 1938 for political reasons and was drafted into military service in World War II in 1941, where he was taken prisoner by the British. After his return from captivity in November 1945, he was employed by the Vorarlberger Illwerke between 1945 and 1946, after which he was administrator of the Montafon estate until 1947.

Politics and functions

Marent was a member of the Christian Social Party and from 1918 to 1921 a member of the state party leadership. After the Second World War he joined the newly founded People's Party and was involved from 1957 to 1959 as a member of the state party council of the ÖVP Vorarlberg. He was also active as a member of the ÖAAB regional group board. Between 1947 and 1965 he was mayor of the Schruns community in local politics. As a member of the Bludenz constituency, he represented the ÖVP in the state parliament from October 22, 1957 to October 28, 1959, succeeding Anton Galehr . He was a member of the Agriculture Committee, an alternate member of the Legal Affairs Committee and an alternate member of the Social Policy Committee.

Marent was a member of the Piusverein, co-founder of the Austrian Armed Forces in 1920 and at times its country director. In the inter-war period he also worked in the “Heeresschule Enns Men's Choir”, in the Schruns gymnastics association and as a member of the Montafon stand. He was chairman of the supervisory board of Montafoner Bergbahnen GmbH., Representative of tourism in the Austrian association of municipalities, committee member of the Vorarlberg community association and member of the regional management of the Vorarlberg war victims association. Furthermore, he was chairman of the Austrian Alpine Club in the Montafon district, member of the Landeskameradschaftsbund and valley chairman of the Landeskameradschaftsbund Montafon.

Private

Marent was born the son of the Schruns farmer Ferdinand Marent (1846–1909) and his wife Viktoria Stemer (1864–1924). He married Regina Köberle (1918–2018) on August 16, 1948 and had five daughters and one son.
