Dave Murray (born September 5, 1953 in Vancouver , † October 23, 1990 ibid) was a Canadian ski racer . He specialized in downhill runs , but also skied giant slaloms . In the 1970s he formed the quintet of the so-called Crazy Canucks together with Jim Hunter , Dave Irwin , Steve Podborski and Ken Read .
biography
Murray was a member of the Canadian national team from 1971. In the World Cup he initially missed the points for several years, but was still able to take part in the 1974 World Cup; in St. Moritz , he then surprised with eighth place in the downhill. He took his first World Cup points in February 1975 in Megève as sixth of the combination .
As a result, Murray established himself in midfield. His best results in the World Cup are two second places, achieved on February 11, 1978 in Les Houches and on December 10, 1978 in Schladming . The 1978/79 season he finished tenth in the downhill classification, and in 1979 he was also elected Sportsman of the Year for the Province of British Columbia . After finishing eleventh at the 1982 World Cup in Schladming, he announced his retirement from top-class sport.
Murray lived in Whistler , where he worked as a ski instructor and held summer training camps. He was also an advertising representative for various companies in the ski sport industry. He died of skin cancer at the age of 37 . His wife Stephanie Sloan was a freestyle skier and won the overall World Cup in 1979; his daughter Julia Murray , born in 1988, is a successful athlete in the freestyle discipline of ski cross . The slope in Whistler is named after Dave Murray and was used for the men's alpine ski races during the 2010 Winter Olympics .
