Crazy Canucks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Crazy Canucks (dt .: crazy Canadians ) were a group of Canadian ski racers who dominated the downhill races in the Alpine Ski World Cup from the mid-1970s .

The Crazy Canucks included Jim Hunter , Dave Irwin , Ken Read , Dave Murray, and Steve Podborski . They broke into the European-dominated World Cup scene from 1971 and quickly acquired a reputation for being a fast and daring racing style. Head coach Scott Henderson played a major role in these successes .

Despite repeated spectacular falls, the members of the Crazy Canucks were often at the top of the podium. Ken Read was the first North American ever to win a World Cup downhill in December 1975. Between 1975 and 1984 the quintet recorded a total of 14 victories in World Cup descents, plus 10 second places and 16 third places.

In 2006, they were honored with inclusion in Canada's Walk of Fame .
