Karl "Charly" Kahr (born June 8, 1932 in Schladming ) is a former Austrian ski racer and alpine ski trainer.

life and career

Charly Kahr was born in 1932 as the son of the railway worker Otto Kahr and his wife Johanna in Schladming, Styria . He began his ski career as a racer at the age of ten, but gave up in 1957 after a series of injuries and decided to become a coach.

After several successful years as a trainer in the region and also in Germany, Charly Kahr started as a youth trainer for the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV). In 1967 he was promoted to coach of the women's national team. He held this position until 1970, when he left the ÖSV and went to England, where he was also the coach of the women's national team and celebrated great successes with it.

In 1972 the new ÖSV racing director Toni Sailer brought him back to Austria as a men's downhill trainer, where his fame increased significantly due to the great successes of the downhill riders, which is why he was probably promoted to men's head coach in 1976. He held this position until the end of his coaching career in 1985. These successes in the downhill earned him his nickname "Downhill-Charly".

Kahr lives in Schladming and runs a ski rental and two restaurants together with his wife and daughter.

Honor

accusations

On February 8, 2018, the online edition of the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported exclusively on the affidavits of several women in which (also) Kahr is accused of sexual assault and rape . In the 1960s, while working as a trainer, he raped a minor, 16-year-old skier. Kahr denied the allegations. He asked his lawyer to name the women so that he could defend himself.

In response to these allegations, the Leoben public prosecutor initiated an investigation in April 2018. This was discontinued in October 2018 "because the alleged acts were already statute barred".

In February 2018, Kahr sued the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) for defamation , violation of personal life and violation of identity protection. Kahr's lawyer Manfred Ainedter claimed that the SZ should not have given Kahr's name because he was no longer a person of public interest . One of the witnesses in this trial is Nicola Werdenigg . The Regional Court of Vienna postponed the action on October 25, 2018 to January 24, 2019.
