Stefan Niederseer (born September 29, 1962 in Saalbach-Hinterglemm ) is a former Austrian ski racer . The downhill specialist became Austrian champion in 1985 and achieved a podium in the World Cup and two victories in the European Cup .

biography

Niederseer came to the ski club in his home town at the age of three. He was accepted into the junior squad of the Austrian Ski Association through the Salzburg national team and in the late 1970s he was promoted to the national team. He made his debut in the World Cup on December 21, 1980 on the downhill from St. Moritz . Initially, however, he mostly started in the European Cup , in which he celebrated two victories in the 1981/82 season and came third once, finishing second in the downhill classification and tenth in the overall classification behind the Swiss Karl Alpiger .

Niederseer got his first World Cup points in December 1982 in the two downhill runs on the Saslong in Val Gardena , where he finished 13th and 14th. In the next winter he was already in the top ten three times. He finished seventh at the season opener in Schladming as well as in the downhill run from Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the end of January. In Garmisch he also took sixth place in the combination. In the 1984/85 season , Niederseer also made it into the top ten three times. Third place in the Downhill from Bad Kleinkirchheim on February 14, 1985 was his best result ever. In the Downhill World Cup he came 15th and in Radstadt he was Austrian downhill champion.

The Salzburg man also achieved several top ten results in the 1985/86 season . The best results were fifth in the downhill from Val-d'Isère and sixth in the combination of Åre . He also came into the points for the first time in the Super-G. He achieved similar results the next winter . With fourth place in the downhill from Val-d'Isère, he achieved his second-best World Cup result.
