Niklas Eric Henning (born March 6, 1964 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish ski racer . He specialized in the downhill and super-G disciplines.

biography

Henning played football in the junior division of Djurgårdens IF in his youth . He learned to ski in a former garbage dump on the outskirts of Stockholm. He first appeared internationally at the Junior World Championship in 1982 . The following year he won his first of eight Swedish championship titles . He scored his first points in a World Cup race on January 10, 1984 when he was 14th in the giant slalom in Adelboden . A few weeks later he finished 18th in the giant slalom at the 1984 Winter Olympics .

In the World Cup season 1984/85 Henning could never classify himself in the points, after which he gradually began to specialize in the fast disciplines. On December 15, 1985, he achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup when he finished second behind Marc Girardelli in the combined classification , which was composed of the downhill in Val Gardena and the giant slalom in Alta Badia . Two more top 10 results were added during the 1985/86 season . In contrast, performance in the three following winters was moderate. His best result during this period was tenth in the combination at the 1988 Winter Olympics .

Henning was most successful in the 1989/90 season . On December 10, 1989, he surprisingly won the Super-G of Val-d'Isère , ahead of Franck Piccard and Peter Runggaldier . This winter he was classified in the top ten three more times. Another five top 10 results were added in the 1990/91 season . Henning contested his last World Cup race in March 1992 in Panorama , where he finished the downhill in tenth place.
