Halsnes first attracted attention in 1978 when he won the Norwegian championship in giant slalom. In the 1978/79 season of the European Cup , he won the overall ranking and finished second in the giant slalom ranking. He won his first points in a World Cup race on December 8, 1979 when he finished seventh in the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère . This winter, three more top 10 results followed, including a third place in the Waterville Valley giant slalom on February 26th. At the 1980 Winter Olympics , he was 11th in giant slalom and 16th in slalom.
The 1980/81 World Cup season was successful for Halsnes . He was among the top ten in six giant slalom and six slalom races. He finished the slalom of St. Anton am Arlberg on February 1, 1980 in third, with which he achieved his second podium finish. In the World Cup season 1981/82 Halsnes could not quite reach this level. A sixth place remained his best result, otherwise he was classified eight times between 10th and 14th place. At the 1982 World Cup he was 11th twice. After winning the second Norwegian giant slalom championship, Halsnes resigned from top-class sport.
