Stephen McAlpine

Stephen A. McAlpine (born May 23, 1949 in Yakima , Washington ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was lieutenant governor of the state of Alaska from 1982 to 1990 .

Career

Stephen McAlpine, the fourth child of Robert E. and Myrtle B. (Loomis) McAlpine, attended school in Yakima and spent two years at Maryknoll Seminary in Mountain View , California . He then graduated from the University of Washington with degrees in history and political science. He then graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a law degree in 1976 .

Stephen originally came to Alaska in 1970 and settled in Valdez with a classmate . In the years that followed, both worked on the Trans Alaska Pipeline . After his admission to the bar in 1977, McAlpine co-founded the law firm Ginotti & McAlpine , PC with James D. Ginotti . During this time he was elected to the Valdez City Council and eventually served two terms as mayor. Then he was elected lieutenant governor of Alaska in 1982 and re-elected in 1986. He served under Governors William Sheffield and Steve Cowper . He then returned to his practice as a lawyer in Anchorage .
