Fran Ulmer

Frances Ann Ulmer (born February 1, 1947 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party .

Ulmer studied economics and political science at the University of Wisconsin . After receiving her BA degree, she attended the university's law school and eventually received a JD doctorate there. In 1973, she moved to Alaska.

Ulmer was Mayor of Alaska's capital Juneau from 1983 to 1985 and was a member of the Alaska House of Representatives from 1986 to 1994. In 1994 she became the first female lieutenant governor of Alaska. Ulmer held this office until 2002. In the same year she ran for the office of governor, but could not prevail against her Republican rival Frank Murkowski . Ulm has been Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage since 2007 .

Ulmer is married and has two children, a son and a daughter.
