The Ölschnitz is a 22 km long right and northern tributary of the White Main on the northern edge of the Fichtelgebirge .

The Ölschnitz rises in a broader source with source stone from granite in Solg , a district of Münchberg . It flows into the White Main near Bad Berneck . The Ölschnitz flows from Solg in a wide basin to the village of Oelschnitz , then to Tennersreuth, crosses under the A 9 , once supplied water for the Streitauermühle and reaches the Böseneck district of the town of Gefrees . From there, the winding valley becomes increasingly narrow, initially on short stretches at the duck mill and at the arch around the mountain spur near Stein . The steep, rocky narrow valley on the last two kilometers before the spa gardens of Bad Berneck cuts through a slide and has a rich flora. It is considered one of the most beautiful valleys of the Fichtelgebirge and is crossed by the Westweg and the Jean-Paul-Weg . After a good 22 kilometers, the Ölschnitz flows into the White Main in Bad Berneck. There it carries an average of 1.63 m³ / s of water, almost half more than the White Main with 1.12 m³ / s.

Economic use

Many mill wheels were driven by water power along the course of the stream. In 1536 the Bernecker had fishing rights in the "Ölsnitz", in 1692 it was called "the best trout brook of the Fichtelberg". In 1732, the Margrave of Bayreuth issued a protection ordinance for the river pearl mussels that occur there . 6000 pearls were harvested between 1733 and 1810, and after 1810 pearl fishing was under the supervision of a pearl inspector of the Bavarian Forestry Administration.
