Hugh Wade

Hugh J. Wade (born June 29, 1901 in Dougherty , Iowa , † March 25, 1995 in Juneau , Alaska ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ), who held the office of lieutenant governor of the state of Alaska from 1959 to 1966 .

Career

Hugh Wade practiced as a lawyer in Omaha , Nebraska . In 1926 he moved to what was then the Alaska Territory and took over the management of the FBI department there. He was one of the first group of FBI agents hired and trained by J. Edgar Hoover .

In 1959, Wade was elected Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. He was the first incumbent after the conversion of the Alaska Territory to the 49th  state of the United States on January 3, 1959. His office was Secretary of State of Alaska ; only after the constitutional amendment of 1970 were his successors officially named Lieutenant Governor of the State of Alaska . Wade worked under Governor William Allen Egan , who also served from 1959 to 1966. Wade's successor was Republican Keith Miller .
