Craig Eaton Campbell (born March 24, 1952 in Springfield , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . He was lieutenant governor of the state of Alaska in 2009 and 2010 .

Career

Craig Campbell grew up in Longmeadow . He then studied political science until 1974 as part of the ROTC military training support program . He then served as an officer in the United States Air Force . He was trained as an air traffic controller . He was stationed at several air force bases in the United States. The Air Force also gave him further training and allowed him to study at Golden Gate University near San Francisco while he was serving . In 1981 he came to Alaska on business, where he commanded the air traffic controller at Elmendorf Air Force Base near Anchorage . In 1984 he left the Air Force, whose reserves he continued to serve, and joined the California National Guard Air Corps . At the same time he worked in the private sector as a consultant on many topics related to flight operations.

Since 1986 he lived in Alaska, where he also joined the Air Division of the National Guard in 1991. He went through the officer ranks from lieutenant colonel and made it to lieutenant general, a three-star general, by 2008. In 2003, he became Commander of the Alaskan National Guard ( Adjutant General ) and Secretary of State for Military and Veterans Affairs. He was awarded many medals for his military achievements. In the Air Force Reserve ( Federal National Guard ) he made it to two-star general (major general) until his retirement in 2009. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He became a member of the Anchorage City Council. In 1994 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of mayor there.

In 2009, Sarah Palin , then Alaska Governor , announced her resignation. At the same time her lieutenant governor Sean Parnell was her successor. Palin also determined the successor to the office of lieutenant governor and appointed Craig Campbell to that office. This practice is allowed in Alaska by the state constitution. Campbell held this post between August 10, 2009 and December 6, 2010. He then waived a regular candidacy. In February 2011 he became COO at Alaska Aerospace Corporation (AAC) . He has been President and Chief Executive Officer of this company since October 2012.
