Llyn Foulkes

Llyn Foulkes (born November 17, 1934 in Yakima , Washington ) is an American artist who lives and works in Los Angeles .

Life

During his studies at the Chouinard Art Institute , today the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia , California , he exhibited in 1959 at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, where his first solo exhibition took place in 1961. Other early solo exhibitions took place in 1962 at the Pasadena Art Museum , now the Norton Simon Museum , and in 1964 at the Oakland Art Museum . In 1967, Foulkes exhibited for the first time in Europe at the Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris at the Paris Biennale. In 1967 he represented the USA at the IX. São Paulo Biennial at the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo in São Paulo , Brazil .

Foulkes painted in the style of old landscape photography and old postcards in the 1960s. His first retrospective took place in 1974 at the Newport Harbor Art Museum in Newport Beach , California. Since that time he has also been active as a musician, he still appears today as a soloist with his self-developed musical apparatus “Machine” made up of numerous percussion instruments and horns and publishes CDs with his compositions.

Since the early 1980s he has developed a painting technique using scraps of fabric or upholstery as well as photographs. In 2011 his painting Where did I go wrong? from 1991 to be seen at the Biennale di Venezia . He participated with some of his works at the dOCUMENTA (13) of 2012 in the Fridericianum in Kassel . In 2013 the Armand Hammer Museum of Art in Los Angeles dedicated a retrospective to him, which was subsequently shown at the New Museum of Contemporary Art , New York and the Museum Kurhaus Kleve .
