The Laguna Art Museum is an art museum in Laguna Beach in the US state of California . Founded in 1918, the facility sits high on the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean at the junction of Cliff Drive and Pacific Coast Highway .

The museum mainly exhibits works of contemporary and modern art . The collection includes approximately 3,500 copies, mostly by Californian artists.

history

The museum was founded in 1918 by a small group of painters as the Laguna Beach Art Association . From 1920 Edgar Payne was chairman of the company. The first exhibitions took place in the old town hall until the move to the current location in 1929. The Laguna Beach Art Association's branches in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa also quickly gained national recognition.

On the initiative of the artist Frank Cuprien, an extension was opened in 1951. In 1985, the facility took the name Laguna Art Museum .

A new era began in 1996 when the art museum merged with the Newport Harbor Art Museum . The Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) emerged from the merger and is located in the neighboring town of Newport Beach . Only one year later, the Laguna Art Museum reorganized as an independent offshoot of the OCMA.

Since its inception, the museum has mainly exhibited works of contemporary and modern art . In addition, a selection of historical paintings up to Pop Art is presented. Further thematic exhibitions completed the offer.

The Laguna Art Museum currently owns more than 3,500 works of art. This includes works of contemporary and modern art, but also historical paintings. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, prints, videos and installations from the early 19th century to the present day.

The collection focuses on works of Californian art. Among them are well-known artists such as John Baldessari , Ferdinand Deppe , John McCracken , Bruce Nauman , Edward Ruscha and many more.
