Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo
The Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo ( MAM ) is a museum in São Paulo .
It is located in the Parque do Ibirapuera city park . The museum was founded in 1948 by the industrialist Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho , who donated his private collection. On March 8, 1949, the first thematic group exhibition was opened under the title Do figurativismo ao abstracionismo , curator was the Belgian art critic Léon Degand .
It served as the Great Pavilion ( Pavilhão Ciccillo Matarazzo ) of the São Paulo Biennale in 1951 . The architecture of the museum is modeled on the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The building was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Helio Uchôa, the surrounding garden and sculpture park by Roberto Burle Marx .
The museum contains works of art by the artists Anita Malfatti , Aldo Bonadei , Alfredo Volpi , Emiliano Di Cavalcanti , José António da Silva , Joan Miró , Marc Chagall , Mario Zanini , Os Gêmeos , Nina and Pablo Picasso , the sculpture park shows works by Franz Weissmann , Emanoel Araújo , Amílcar de Castro , Felícia Leirner , Elisa Bracher and others.
