Nina Pandolfo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nina Pandolfo (* 1977 in Tupã , São Paulo ) is a Brazilian graffiti and street art artist, painter and sculptor . Internationally she is best known by her first name Nina , which she uses as a stage name .

Nina is considered to be the leading female representative of urban art in Brazil . The depictions of wide-eyed, brightly colored girls are characteristic of her work. Nina is married to Otavio Pandolfo, one of the two twins of the artist duo Os Gêmeos . The three Brazilian street artists appear as Os Gêmeos & Nina in joint work and activities . In Germany, Nina was involved in painting the pedestrian underpass under Munich's Ludwigsbrücke in 2006. In Wuppertal she is represented with the Mural Army of Lost Souls , which she also created in 2006 together with Os Gêmeos as part of the Outsides project in a railway tunnel sponsored by Red Bull . Her work has been featured in numerous art exhibitions and she has participated in art projects, festivals and promotions around the world.

Artistic career

Nina was born in 1977 in Tupã, a university town in the southwest of the Brazilian state of São Paulo . She lives in São Paulo . Supported and guided by her art-loving mother, Nina drew and painted as a small child. In her early teens , she made her first pictures on canvases and attended a school for street theater in addition to the general institutional school . When she discovered murals in the streets in 1991, she began to be interested in this form of artistic expression. She had the impression that the street artists were doing the same thing as themselves, namely art outside, like they did in their street theater. She then took part in a graffiti workshop at her theater. The teacher, however, was of the opinion that graffiti was not for her - probably, as she later said in an interview, because she was the only girl in the workshop. She left the course frustrated. However, she sprayed her first graffiti in 1992 when she met other graffiti artists in high school, including Otavio Pandolfo, her future husband. Still supported in her activities by her parents, she was not deterred when some boys in the street said that what she was painting on the walls had nothing to do with graffiti.

Later she switched to larger-scale murals . In doing so, she said in 2011, her style has always remained the same, canvases and house walls are just different platforms. However, she prefers house facades for many works. For example, her picture of the tragedy in Iraq is much better off in public space than in an art gallery . In her works, Nina almost exclusively depicts wide, colorful landscapes, which she populates with cheeky, big-eyed girls, their toys and their animal friends. The captivating characters and their activities are, according to artnet, visual representations of adult introspection and the dreams and fears of childhood. With boundless escapism, Nina expresses the vision of a better world, which is partly reminiscent of the Asian school like Kaikai Kiki, even if it is not directly influenced by this art direction. One of her most striking works is the painting of the huge facade of the listed Kelburn Castle near the Scottish town of Fairlie , a joint project with Os Gêmeos from 2007.

When asked by a fan why she only portrayed girls, Nina replied that she was a girl herself, and whenever she tried to draw boys, they would have looked like girls again. As on various occasions in her childhood, Nina has been making smaller sculptures of her girl figures since 2011 at the latest . Nina's work is shown at numerous exhibitions and urban art events. On the occasion of the exhibition Nina Pandolfo: Feelings in Newcastle upon Tyne in 2013 the Lazarides Gallery stated that their “Spice Angels Portraits” consisted of stylistic elements from Manga , Bandes desinées and fashion illustration , executed with all the garish and gripping imagination of the feminist novelist Angela Carter who was known for her magical realism and picaresque novels . Nina is invited to street art festivals, actions and projects around the world, often together with Os Gêmeos. Nina is now considered to be the leading representative of street art in Brazil, and numerous younger artists have drawn inspiration from her work.

Works (selection)

Mural Global, São Paulo 2001

As part of Mural Global , a worldwide mural project for Agenda 21 , Nina realized a 300 m² mural in São Paulo in 2001, together with Os Gêmeos and the likewise Brazilian graffiti artists Vitché and Herbert Baglione as well as with the German graffiti artists Codeak , Loomit , DAIM and Tasek . The mural is located under a viaduct of the Beneficência Portuguesa Hospital on Avendia 23 de Maio and is dedicated to the subject of air, earth, water and fire . Mural Global is an initiative of Farbfieber e. V. Düsseldorf under the auspices of UNESCO . The project, as part of which 80 murals were created worldwide by 2012, was awarded the Socioculture Innovation Prize 2002 by the Socioculture Fund.

Ludwigsbrücke, Munich 2006

In May 2006, the Culture Department of the City of Munich, in cooperation with the Kreisjugendring München-Stadt (KJR) and the Building Department, initiated a street art project entitled Mural GloBALL on the occasion of the cultural program for the 2006 World Cup . Organized by the dye works , the youth culture facility of the KJR, young talents from Munich, in collaboration with the Munich artist Loomit , Os Gêmeos & Nina and the Australian Shime, created a mural with football motifs and images of Munich's city history in the pedestrian underpass at Ludwigsbrücke . A partial image shows the heads of a group of spectators, including Nina's big-eyed girls' faces and the yellow-tinged figures typical of Os Gêmeos. In another part of the Isar bridge, Nina painted a huge surreal girl figure with butterfly wings sitting on a soccer ball.

On the Outsides project sponsored by Red Bull , an illegal corporate street art attack in Wuppertal in autumn 2006, Os Gêmeos & Nina created the army of lost souls in the disused Rott tunnel . Murals with thirty human-sized figures showed women, men and children as sad creatures, whose desolation and forlornness impressively staged the gloomy atmosphere of the old tunnel. The figures with the yellow-tinged faces and skinny limbs typical of Os Gêmeos, as well as the wide-eyed, brightly colored girls typical of Nina, were intended to reflect the horror of the Second World War . The work of art was destroyed in 2010 on the initiative of the non-profit association Wuppertal Movement for urban planning reasons ( conversion of the 22-kilometer route of the disused Wuppertal Northern Railway to a pedestrian and cycle path).
