Heiko Zahlmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heiko Zahlmann (* 1973 in Hamburg ) is a German graffiti artist. He is also known by his graffiti pseudonyms "Daddy Cool" or "RKT one" . Zahlmann lives and works in Hamburg.

Life

In 1999, Heiko Zahlmann founded the getting-up studio community in Hamburg together with the artists Mirko Reisser ( DAIM ) and Gerrit Peters ( Tasek ) . Since then, the artist collective has been working together on projects that have also attracted international attention.

Heiko Zahlmann is represented by the Borchardt gallery in Hamburg.

“Heiko Zahlmann thinks it's wrong to simply put graffiti on canvas and into the room. Because the special thing about graffiti in the outdoor area can only be domesticated as a panel painting and rescued into the closed art space with difficulty. On concrete panels, he pays homage to the simple markings of his roots and gives the, so to speak, original material in the neutral exhibition space an idea of the power of setting that a simple sprayed line can achieve. [...] Because as little as the name 'Graffiti' says something about the status of a work within what is now a wide field of the most varied of manifestations, so the reference to writing remains fundamental - at least to the gesture of writing. And so these works, too, are typefaces from more or less hermetic fragments of an individual artist’s handwriting to longer texts. Heiko Zahlmann remains completely a sprayer. "

- Hajo Schiff (art critic), 2007

“Heiko Zahlmann's 'Destroyline' seems far removed from his early work. The color variety of the eye-catching murals was reduced to a simple black. The letter and number combinations have also given way. All that remains is the concrete as work material and the line sprayed with a single movement of the hand. He comments on the imagery of minimal art in an ironic way and combines it with the aesthetics of graffiti through the targeted use of spray paint. "

Projects

20357

In 2008, Heiko Zahlmann designed a concrete sculpture for Hamburg's Karolinenplatz with the title "20357".

Urban Discipline exhibitions

The Urban Discipline exhibitions, the first of which was conceived, curated and organized by Heiko Zahlmann in collaboration with Gerrit Peters and Mirko Reisser in 2000 , are among the world's most important graffiti exhibitions. Os Gêmeos spoke of a great project in interviews. Urban Discipline was one of the first and still largest graffiti exhibitions ever carried out, which also helped artists like Daniel Man and Banksy to take an important career step. It was important to the organizers to fight for its establishment as an art form at a time when graffiti was no longer just a scribble but was still not really taken seriously. International stars of the scene came to Hamburg for the first exhibition. The most important representatives of the international graffiti and street art scene gathered in the next two years, during which the project was still organized by getting-up . In 2001, Os Gêmeos from Brazil and Martha Cooper from New York, artists from all over Germany as well as from Brazil, Austria, France, the USA and Switzerland exhibited in the Alte Postortierhalle on Hamburg's Stephansplatz . In 2002 again 34 international artists from all over the world came together to exhibit on 1700 square meters in the Astra halls in Hamburg's St. Pauli district.

Dock Art

For two and a half years, Heiko Zahlmann and Mirko Reisser (DAIM) worked as artistic directors in collaboration with Lothar Knode on the Dock-Art project . The 2000 m² graffiti was unveiled in 2001 opposite the Landungsbrücken at the Port of Hamburg on the outer wall of Dock 10 of the Blohm + Voss shipyard .

Social

Heiko Zahlmann has already carried out several charitable projects together with the getting-up studio community : Mit Gefangenehilfe Jugend e. V. he cooperated on a project that included the visualization of the basic idea of the association. The association works within the prison and aims to bring young people closer to everyday life in a correctional facility.

The Jamliner is a project of the State Youth Music School Hamburg and the MusikSchulVereins e. V. , Friends of the youth music school. Young people from the age of twelve from socially disadvantaged districts of Hamburg can attend a “rolling music school” directly on site and free of charge.

With the graffiti and street art workshop Stylekickz , once a year young people had the opportunity to realize an artistic project with professional support in order to gain qualifications in real-life topics.

And we are still very grateful for this opportunity back then. There, too, we got to know a lot of interesting writers from Germany and all over Europe. Thanks to DAIM , Tasek , Daddy Cool, Stohead and many others who worked really hard for it. We know that, it was a feat to make it all possible. Everything went very well, everyone helped everyone, no competition among each other, it was really a very good atmosphere. It was nice to be able to make our contribution and to be able to show a piece of Brazilian graffiti as part of the exhibition. We noticed very quickly that many did not even know that there was graffiti in Brazil, let alone something of life here. Some of them didn't understand our work at all back then. We still have a lot of respect for what happened in Hamburg back then. A great project with a great story behind it. Urban Discipline has actually been one of the first and still largest gallery exhibitions that have combined graffiti art, style and a professional presentation perfectly and successfully. For many this event was an important step for more, Daniel Man , DAIM and also Banksy ! "
