Brad Downey

Brad Downey (* 1980 in Louisville , Kentucky ) is an American artist. He lives in Berlin .

Life

Downey was born in Louisville and traveled the country as a member of a United States Marine Corps family. In 1998 he moved to New York and began studying film at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn . He graduated in 2003. His thesis is a documentary on street art entitled Public Discourse . This has been shown worldwide, including at the London Institute of Contemporary Arts and at the Copenhagen International Documentary Festival.

In 2003 Downey moved to London and obtained a Masters degree in Painting and Sculpture from the Slade School of Art in London with Bruce McLean .

He gained notoriety through his collaboration with the street art artist Leon Reid IV AKA VERBS, AKA Darius Jones which was also the subject of a novel.

Downey mostly creates three-dimensional objects in public spaces. He himself describes these works as sculptures . His art also has a strong performative character.

In 2008, Downey sprayed green paint on the shop windows of KaDeWe - on behalf of Lacoste .

His works are represented in the Reinking Collection , among others .

A wooden statue of the US First Lady Melania Trump made by him in 2019 near the Slovenian city of Sevnica was willfully set on fire by strangers on July 4, 2020 and removed because of the damage it caused.
