Tupã - city administration

The university city of Tupã is located in the southwest of the Brazilian state of São Paulo , near the border with the neighboring state of Paraná to the south . The city had an estimated 65,524 inhabitants on 628 km² in 2019. The name of the city goes back to the indigenous people, the Tupí , who were also resident in this region.

The region is characterized by agriculture, in particular the production of sugar cane, soybeans, corn and, increasingly, manioc ( tapioca ). An increasing proportion of sugar cane and manioc production is intended for further processing into alcohol (ethanol). The local industry in Tupã is determined by various factories in the food industry and the furniture industry. This is one of the reasons why the cultivation of coffee plants has been reduced in recent years. In addition to agriculture, livestock is also farmed, in particular extensive cattle breeding, as well as poultry and egg production. The neighboring town of Bastos is known in Brazil as "Capital do Ovo" (the capital of eggs (production)).

In addition to the agricultural industry (mills, oil mills, etc.), the food and furniture industries are more pronounced in Tupã. The service sector is below average.
