Culture Department (Munich)

The cultural department is one of twelve municipal departments in the state capital of Munich and is responsible for promoting the arts and culture of Munich from high culture to adult education centers and the independent scene .

Household and staff

The cultural department has a total budget of around 220,000,000 euros (as of 2019) for its expenditure, of which around 20 percent goes to the Münchner Kammerspiele and around 19 percent to the Munich City Library .

The facilities of the cultural department (excluding the non-profit limited liability companies) employ around 1280 people, of which around 500 are in libraries, around 340 in theaters, around 180 in municipal museums, around 150 in the Munich Philharmonic and around 110 in the specialist departments for cultural infrastructure, Events and cultural promotion are active.

Tasks of the cultural department

  • Urban cultural promotion through the provision of cultural infrastructure in the city center and the city districts, advice and support for cultural events, awards for cultural workers as well as in-kind and cash benefits for projects and institutions.
  • Promotion of cultural and artistic workers in Munich - e.g. B. through prizes, grants and studios.
  • Promotion of district culture: addressing a broader public as well as cultural education in order to enable all Munich residents to participate in culture and art.
  • Promotion of cultural diversity and intercultural work in Munich
  • International cultural exchange, e.g. B. Promotion of the International Munich Peace Conference
