The Boundary Bay Airport ( IATA : YDT ; ICAO : CZBB ) is an airport in the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is located 16 miles south of Vancouver in the Delta community , on Boundary Bay near the US border . The airport, which opened on July 11, 1983, is mainly used for general civil aviation . It has facilities for aircraft maintenance, flight training and air traffic control training . Since it is classified as an airport of entry and officials from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) are stationed there, entry from abroad is possible.

Due to the short distance to Vancouver International Airport , Boundary Bay is not served by scheduled airliners. However, it is operated by charter flights and serves as a maintenance base for numerous smaller airlines. Measured by the number of flight movements, it is Canada's fifth largest airport.

history

After the Commonwealth Air Training Plan was launched in 1939, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) looked for suitable locations to train pilots. After properties were acquired on Boundary Bay in 1940, training courses began on April 10, 1941. From July 1, 1943, aircraft of the types Hawker Hurricane , Consolidated B-24 and Handley Page Hampden were stationed here. The last fighter aircraft took off on October 31, 1945 and in 1946 the RCAF closed the airfield.

From 1949 Boundary Bay was used for telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance , but closed again in 1971. The Delta community used the site for exhibitions and car races. When it became apparent that the nearby international airport could no longer cope with general civil aviation, the Canadian Department of Transportation proposed reactivating Boundary Bay. The airfield was significantly expanded and reopened on July 11, 1983. After several changes of ownership, Alpha Aviation has been operating the airport since December 1, 2004.
