The Abbotsford International Airport ( IATA : YXX ; ICAO : CYXX ) is an airport in the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is four kilometers southwest of downtown Abbotsford and three kilometers north of the US border . The airfield is classified as an airport of entry and therefore officials from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) are stationed there.
Abbotsford is the second largest airport in the Lower Mainland region and the sixth largest in Canada by number of flight movements. It serves as a relief for scheduled aircraft to and from Vancouver International Airport, 75 km further west . In addition, it is served by several charter and low-cost airlines (above all Westjet Airlines ) and is available for general civil aviation . The Abbotsford International Airshow , one of the most important air shows in the country , takes place at the airport every August .
history
After the Commonwealth Air Training Plan was launched , the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) looked for suitable locations to train pilots. In 1940 she bought land outside Abbotsford and built an airfield, which was completed in September 1943.
The airfield was closed from 1952 to 1958 and was handed over to the Ministry of Transport by the Air Force on April 1, 1958. This had Hangar 2 converted into a terminal. Abbotsford is primarily used for general aviation and as an alternate location for Vancouver International Airport. The first air show took place in 1962.
On January 1, 1997, operations were transferred from the Department of Transportation to the City of Abbotsford. In the same year Abbotsford officially became a passenger airport. At the end of December 1998 a new terminal building was put into operation.
