North Saanich is a district ( District municipality ) in the north of the Saanich Peninsula on Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia .

location

The district is part of the Greater Victoria metropolitan area , in the Capital Regional District and borders the Central Saanich district to the south . North Saanich encloses the small town of Sidney on the east coast . To the north and east, the district is directly on Haro Street , which connects the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca Straits , and to the west on Saanich Inlet . In addition, the district at Saanich Inlet encloses the two Indian reservations of Cole Bay 3 of the Pauquachin First Nation and Union Bay 4 of the Tseycum First Nation .

history

In July 1905, the settlements in the north of the Saanich Peninsula were granted municipal self-government (incorporated). At that time, the district still included the town of Sidney, which also housed the town hall for the district. In 1911, Sidney was finally detached from the district and became an independent municipality.

The district experienced an upswing in the years after 1940, when the Canadian armed forces set up a base on the site of what is now Victoria International Airport . At times 10,000 military personnel were stationed in the district.

Demographics

The 2011 census revealed a population of 11,085 for the district. The population increased 2.4% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in British Columbia grew 7.0%.

Two highways run through the area of ​​the parish. The Highway 17 resulting in a north-south direction by the district and parallel to the Highway 17A .

Victoria International Airport, which connects Vancouver Island to various national and international airports, is located in the district.

To the north of the district is the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal . From here there are connections to the Lower Mainland (via the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal ) and to Anacortes in the United States of America .

The main tourist attractions of the place are the British Columbia Aviation Museum at the airport and the McDonald Park Campground as part of the Gulf Islands National Park .
