history

Contract with the Hudson's Bay Company

In 1852, James Douglas signed two contracts with the Saanich. He concluded one on February 6 with the southern Saanich, i.e. the Pauquachin and Malahat, and one on February 11 with the northern Saanich including the Tseycum - signed by Hotutstun and 117 other people. Against several hundred blankets, this contract was the basis to take their land from them, similar to the neighboring Songhees in 1850 .

Reservations

The approximately 157 Tseycum still live in the reserves assigned in 1877, which in turn go back to the treaty of 1852. These are five areas, Union Bay 4 (28 ha), Saturna Island 7 (145.7 ha), Pender Island 8 (3.2 ha), Bare Island 9 (10.5 ha) and Goldstream 13 (4th , 8 ha). In August 2009, 66 of the 166 Tseycum lived in their own reserve, 42 in other reserves and 57 outside, as well as one man on crown land .

Current situation

The Tseycum and Tsawout are tribes that have appeared in the press over disputes over burial sites. These two tribes were about a site on Pender Island that should give way to a resort. It took six months to come to an agreement.
