from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tsawout are one of the First Nations living on Vancouver Island on the Pacific coast of Canada . They belong to the Saanich living around Victoria .

In total, the government numbered 766 Tsawout people. Their houses are on Brentwood Bay. They are one of the five groups of houses or "families" of the Saanich, which include the Malahat and Pauquachin (between Gordon Head and Cowichan Head), the Tsartlip (on Brentwood Bay) and the Tseycum (on Patricia Bay).

They all belong to the North Straits Salish or Lekwungaynung speaking tribal group that includes the Saanich, Songhees and T'sou-ke First Nation. These in turn belong to the coastal Salish who live between Vancouver Island and Washington.

history

Contract with the Hudson's Bay Company

In 1852, Governor James Douglas signed two treaties with the Saanich. He signed one on February 6 with the southern Saanich, i.e. the Pauquachin and Malahat, and one on February 11 with the northern Saanich - signed by Hotutstun and 117 other people. Against several hundred blankets, this contract was the basis to take their land from them, similar to the neighboring Songhees in 1850 . In 1877 they were assigned reservations.

Reservations

The current reserves are in detail: East Saanich 2 (237.7 ha), Fulford Harbor 5 (17.4 ha), Saturna Island 7 (145.7 ha), Pender Island 8 (3.2 ha), Bare Island 9 (10.5 ha) and Goldstream 13 (4.8 ha). In August 2008, 459 registered tsawouts lived on their reservations, 83 on other reservations, and 217 outside.

Current situation

In 1987 the Tsawout succeeded in preventing the construction of a marina , successfully invoking the contract of 1852.
