The first football matches in what was then the French colony of Senegal, which was part of the colonial federation of French West Africa , were played after the First World War between army personnel stationed in Senegal and the crews of foreign ships to the interest of numerous local spectators. In 1921, European trade employees founded UST Dakar (Union sportive des tireurs), the first club in the capital Dakar . The club's president was Jean-Louis Turbet, the first local player Amadou Gueye (known as Mix ). Other teams emerged under European, mostly spiritual, leadership, such as ASC Jeanne d'Arc by the pastor of Dakar, Lecoq. The Union sportive indigène was the first team that consisted only of Senegalese. Its honorary president was Blaise Diagne , the first African member of the French parliament in Paris . Europeans accepted the establishment of the USI in some cases with rejection, so Lecoq threatened every Christian on the team with excommunication if they should take on Joan of Arc. Despite the formation of other clubs, schools and barracks in Dakar and Saint-Louis were the dominant refuge for football matches in Senegal. Captain Tricoire, President of the Commission permanente du sport limited to Dakar, had the stade des Abbatoirs built with credit from the army , and Mayor Goux later built the parc municipal des Sports . Football was initially organized within the multi-sport association of French West Africa, but after differences, numerous functionaries founded the Ligue d'AOF de football association in 1946 . The Coupe d'AOF , initially restricted to Senegalese clubs, was created, which was won eight times by Senegalese teams in the first 10 years.

With the independence of Senegal in 1960, a new era of football began in the country. With the Fédération sénégalaise de football (FSF) the country got an independent football association, a national team was put together and a national championship and a cup competition were introduced.

Association

The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), founded in Senegal's independence year in 1960, has been a member of the world association FIFA since 1962 and of the African association CAF since 1963 .

National team

history

Senegal took part for the first time at the African Cup of Nations in 1965 and was knocked out undefeated after drawing lots. In 1968 there was a preliminary round and until the next participation in 1986 it took 18 years. In 1990 , when they took part in the semi-finals, they achieved their greatest success to date, and Senegal reached the quarter-finals at the tournament in their own country in 1992 , as did in 1994 and 2000 .

2002 was the Senegalese team's most successful year, as the team only lost in the final at the 2002 African Cup and even reached the quarter-finals as a newcomer at the 2002 World Cup . Senegal won the World Cup opening game against the former colonial power France 1-0.

In 2004 the team reached the quarter-finals, finished fourth in 2006 and failed in the preliminary round in 2008 . The 2010 tournament in Angola was missed in qualifying.

The team's nickname is Les Lions de la Téranga ( French for 'the Teranga Lions')
