Football in Sierra Leone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Sierra Leone , as in the other countries of West Africa , alongside athletics , football has a high priority and is very popular.

Association

The Sierra Leonean Football Association "SLFA" was founded in 1967 and joined FIFA in the same year . There are currently three international referees registered with FIFA. With the Football Academy of Sierra Leone, the association maintains its own football academy for the purpose of promoting young talent.

League game operations

The Sierra Leone National Premier League (SLPL) is the highest league in Sierra Leone professional football. 14 national teams regularly take part in the SLPL; the rounds are played back and forth. Since their founding in 1967, the East End Lions from Freetown have been the most successful with 11 titles, closely followed by Mighty Blackpool with 10 titles won.

Due to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, all professional football matches in Sierra Leone were suspended at the beginning of August 2014 and resumed in 2016.

National team

The men's national soccer team of Sierra Leone has so far - with the exception of regional competitions - not yet been able to achieve any notable sporting success. Since there was civil war in Sierra Leone between 1992 and 2002 , the domestic league was often interrupted, so that no professional sports structures could arise. So far, a maximum of the second round could be reached in a qualification for a world championship.
