Alexander Friedrich Wilhelm Kraatz , from 1858 by Kraatz-Koschlau , (born February 12, 1817 in Neu Wunneschin , Lauenburg-Bütow district ; † September 12, 1897 in Friedenau ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

Alexander was the son of the Prussian captain a. D. Karl Christian Kraatz (1785-1859) and his wife Johanna, née Rudloff (1800-1858). His father was the master of Groß-Koschlau and on January 16, 1858 as "von Kraatz-Koschlau" was raised to the hereditary nobility for himself and his descendants .

Military career

After attending the city school in Marienburg and the grammar school and division school in Danzig, Kraatz joined the 4th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on February 12, 1834 . There he was appointed second lieutenant on February 13, 1836 . From 1839 to 1842 he completed the general war school and was assigned to the topographical department of the General Staff in Berlin in 1846/48. On April 19, 1849 he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant and on September 25 of the same year he was posted to the General Staff . On November 12, 1850, he was promoted to captain and assigned to the General Staff of the IV Army Corps . With a patent dated February 13, 1850, he acted as company commander in Infantry Regiment No. 30 from June 18 . Promoted to major on July 25, 1857 , he was reassigned to the General Staff. He was then assigned to the command of the 13th Division . On October 18, 1861, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel , and on July 7, 1862, he was transferred to the general command of the VII Army Corps as the first general staff officer. On February 5, 1863 Kraatz was appointed Chief of Staff of the VII Army Corps and rose to Colonel on July 25, 1864 .

When the war broke out in 1866 he was Chief of the General Staff of the Main Army under General Vogel von Falckenstein . For his planned work in the battles near Hammelburg , Aschaffenburg and Tauberbischofsheim , he was awarded the order Pour le Mérite on September 20, 1866 . On September 25, 1867, he was appointed commander of the 42nd Infantry Brigade and promoted to major general on March 22, 1868 .

At the beginning of the war against France , he took command of the 20th Division on July 18, 1870 and fought as part of the X Army Corps at Mars la Tour in the Metz area , at Beaune-la-Rolande and Orléans . After the Battle of Le Mans , his troops succeeded in conquering the Conlie camp on January 13, 1871, where the supplies for French units to be newly established were located. On May 22nd, he handed over his division to Prince Albrecht of Prussia . He then led the 12th division in Neisse for a short time . On August 18, 1871 he was promoted to lieutenant general and had been in command of the 16th division in Trier since July 20 . Kraatz was put up for disposition on March 4, 1879 with the approval of his resignation letter , conferring the character of General of the Infantry with a pension .

Kraatz was buried in the St. Matthäi cemetery in Berlin.

He married Mathilde Karoline, widowed Kummer, née Rump (1824-1901) on April 24, 1854 in Berlin. The following children were born from the marriage:
