The Lihue Airport is an airport in Lihue on the island of Kaua'i in the US state of Hawaii .

history

Construction on Lihue Airport began in 1948 and was completed when the airport opened on September 1, 1949. The cost of a 3,750 ft (1,143 m) runway, taxiways, and parking positions was $ 679,000 ( $ 7.3 million when adjusted for inflation), plus a terminal building completed in January 1950 for $ 97,000 ($ 1,030,000) adjusted for inflation). Since the number of passengers exceeded all forecasts, the runway was extended to 5,100 ft (1,554 m) and the station building was expanded as early as 1952. In the 1950s, the airport was served by Hawaiian Airlines , Trans-Pacific Airlines and various charter airlines.

In April 1984 the new runway 17/35 was opened, which allowed approaches over the sea and thus reduced the noise pollution of the residents. In February 1987 a new terminal was inaugurated, which for the first time also had passenger boarding bridges .

business

Lihue Airport has direct connections to destinations in the Hawaiian Islands and the mainland United States.
