Luque is a municipality in the Spanish province of Cordoba in southern Andalusia .

Parish Church of La Asunción in Luque

It lies on the northern edge of the UNESCO acknowledged Geopark Sierras Subbéticas , the Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas . The Cabra mountain range extends south-west of Luque . The karst mountains with the 1379 m high Lobatejo as the highest peak are characterized by rugged cliffs, deep gorges and numerous caves. The typical Mediterranean climate is characterized by mild winters and long hot summers. The average temperature is 9 ° in winter and 29.5 ° in summer. Rain falls mainly in winter, while there is no significant rainfall in summer.

Luque had 2994 inhabitants on January 1, 2019 on a total area of ​​140.1 km². The place is 662 m above sea level and is dominated by a castle from the time of the Moorish rule, which was built in the 9th century on the ruins of a fortification from the Roman era . Most of the remains that are visible today date from the 13th century, when the castle was under Ferdinand III. was rebuilt. Another attraction is the parish church of La Asunción , built in the Renaissance style . The church was partially designed by Hernán Ruiz in the 16th century and has a magnificent limestone facade. Inside there is a Baroque style altar from the 17th century and a picture by the artist Juan Martínez Montañés depicting San Juan la Bautista (Eng. John the Baptist ).

The Laguna del Conde Natural Area is about 5 km to the northeast . Numerous migratory birds overwinter in the wetland, including the threatened white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala). The lake is also called Laguna Salobral (German salt lake) because of its high salt content and can be reached from Luque by bike or on foot via the route of a disused railway line.

The Dolmen de La Dehesa de la Lastra is located in Luque.
