The Ames Research Center ( ARC ) is a NASA research center with approx. 3000 employees, half of them NASA members. It is located in Moffett Field ( California ) at the boundaries of cities Mountain View and Sunnyvale .
history
The research facility was founded on December 20, 1939 as the second laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Founding member of NASA's predecessor was the American physicist and later President of Johns Hopkins University , Joseph Sweetman Ames . In his honor, the research facility was initially named Ames Aeronautical Laboratory. With the establishment of the US space agency in 1958, Ames was integrated into NASA and is now one of the field centers.
tasks
One of the main tasks of the ARC is basic research in the field of aviation technology. Ames operated the largest wind tunnel in the world until it was decommissioned in 2003. In the area of supercomputers, Columbia and Pleiades stood out, when they were commissioned in 2004 and 2011, respectively, ranked 2 and 7 of the most powerful computers in the TOP500 list .
The Ames Research Center was also responsible for NASA's Pioneer spacecraft .
With the AILS , the Ames Research Center also operates an image archive that contains paintings, graphics and photos.
