UOP LLC , formerly known as Universal Oil Products , builds and licenses equipment for the petroleum refining , natural gas processing, petrochemical - and manufacturing industries. The roots of the company go back to 1914, when the inventor Carbon "Petroleum" Dubbs created the technological basis for modern refinery processes with the development of thermal cracking . In the decades that followed, UOP engineers acquired thousands of patents that led to important advances in process engineering, profitability, and plant design.

UOP is a subsidiary of Honeywell .

history

UOP was founded in 1914 to explore the market potential of patents held by inventor Jesse A. Dubbs and his son Carbon Petroleum Dubbs. Perhaps because he was born in Pennsylvania oil production centers, Jesse Dubbs gave his son the first name Carbon. He later added a P as a middle initial to make his name more melodious. This earned him his nickname Petroleum, which he kept. His sons and grandchildren were also called Carbon, but with different middle names.

The company was founded in 1914 as the National Hydrocarbon Company . J. Ogden Armor provided the initial capital and took over the initial losses, mostly through legal proceedings due to patent disputes . In 1919 the company was renamed Universal Oil Products and Hiram Halle became a director. In 1921 he founded the Riverside Laboratory in McCook, Illinois . In 1931, various oil companies including Shell , Standard Oil Company of California, Standard Oil Company of Indiana, Standard Oil of New Jersey , The Texas Company, and BP saw an advantage in taking over the company as a joint venture. This led to legal disputes with companies that were not part of the consortium and who called the Department of Justice for violating anti-trust laws.

In the 1940s Vladimir Haensel (later Research Director and Vice President of the company) developed his pioneering catalytic reforming with platinum (platform process) here.
