Alliant Techsystems Inc. ( ATK ) was an international group with headquarters in Arlington , Virginia ( USA ) and agencies in 23 countries. ATK was primarily active in aircraft construction and the manufacture of land mines and ammunition ( Federal Cartridge ).

After the merger of Alliant's ATK Aerospace and Defense armaments division with Orbital Sciences Corporation , the new company Orbital ATK was created on February 9, 2015 . The civil division of Alliant with sporting weapons, hunting weapons, Bushnell binoculars, glasses, Gold Tip sports bows , Blackhawk hunting and outdoor clothing, holsters , CamelBak backpacks etc. was spun off as Vista Outdoor at the same time .

Company history

Alliant Techsystems was founded in 1989/1990 by Honeywell . Today, the group produces a large part of the small-caliber ammunition used by the US police and military, as well as ammunition for sporting and hunting weapons. Alliant Techsystems is also one of the world's largest manufacturers of cluster bombs. Alliant also manufactures depleted uranium projectiles for use in tanks, armored vehicles and howitzers.

The company also produces a number of non-military products, such as propulsion systems for NASA .

ATK manufactures one of the most successful automatic cannons , the M242 Bushmaster in 25 mm caliber. In addition, the Bushmaster II variant is produced in 30 mm caliber . The originally manufactured Bushmaster III in 35 mm calf is now manufactured by Boeing .

Launch Systems Group

ATK's Launch Systems Group, formerly Morton Thiokol, was the main supplier of the space shuttle solid rocket engines. As of December 7, 2005, NASA announced that Alliant had been chosen as the main supplier for the Ares I.

ATK announced at the beginning of February 2011 that, in cooperation with EADS Astrium , the 5-segment booster developed as the first stage for the canceled Ares I and an EPC modified by Astrium for the Ariane 5 as a second stage would be transformed into a new launch vehicle called Liberty for the commercial transport of astronauts for NASA is to be developed.
