history

The Federal Cartridge Company was founded in 1916 by the brothers Harry and Lewis Sherman as the Federal Cartridge and Bicycle Company . They started making ammunition and bicycles . A year later, the Sherman brothers reorganized the company and from then on operated as the Federal Cartridge Company . Due to internal problems, ineffective sales and marketing problems, the brothers closed the company in 1920. Two years later, on April 27, 1922, Charles L. Horn took over the management of the Federal Cartridge Company.

The following decades were marked by growth and the expansion of the company's product portfolio. During World War II , the Federal Cartridge Company won an $ 87 million contract to build a new Twin Cities Ordnance Plant in New Brighton . After the Second World War, the plant produced ammunition for the Korean and Vietnam wars .

In 1985, Federal Cartridge was sold to private investors. They sold Federal Cartridge to Pentair Inc. three years later, in 1988, for $ 175 million . In 1992, Federal Cartridge ousted Remington Arms from second place among ammunition producers in the small-caliber ammunition segment. After nine years with Pentair Inc., Federal Cartridge was sold to Blount International in 1997 for $ 112 million. The owners of Blount International two years later sold the entire company to Lehman Brothers Merchant Banking . 2001 became Alliant Techsystems Federal Premium Ammunition and other companies from the portfolio of Lehmann Brother Merchant Banking and formed from the division ATK Security and Sporting . In 2015 this division became independent under the name Vista Outdoor. Ammunition has been marketed under the name Federal Premium Ammunition since 2002 .
