The Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport is the international airport of Amarillo in the US state of Texas .
It is located in the Amarillo metropolitan area , around ten kilometers east of the city center .
history
In 1929 , Harold English founded the airport as English Field . Transcontinental & Western Airlines , a predecessor of TWA, and Braniff International Airways flew to Amarillo.
In 1942 a military airfield of the United States Air Force was established , on which B-17 "Flying Fortress" were stationed. In 1968 the air base was closed.
A new terminal was built in 1971 and renewed in 2007. In 2003 the airport was renamed in honor of the astronaut Colonel Rick Douglas Husband , was born in Amarillo and had an accident on February 1 of the same year.
Airlines and Destinations
American Airlines connects Amarillo with the hubs Dallas and Phoenix , United Airlines also flies to the hubs Houston and Denver . The low-cost airline Southwest Airlines also serves Dallas Love Field Airport .
