The St. Matthias Church in Sondershausen from 1905 is considered one of the most beautiful church buildings in the region with its historic or neo-Gothic appearance. It is an Evangelical Lutheran house of worship and was dedicated to the Apostle Matthias .
location
The St. Matthias Church is in Stockhausen , a district of Sondershausen, which is west of the center of the city. The church is located in the former village of Anger , in the immediate vicinity of which the rectory, a school building and a kindergarten are located.
history
In 1894, Carl Moeller was the first pastor to come to Stockhausen after the place broke away from the parish office of Jechaburg . Immense construction work began within a very short time on his behalf: the rectory was built in 1898, the large school building in 1900 and a deaconess station in 1901.
The church building dates from 1905 and was also commissioned by Pastor Moeller, as the previous building, a small Romanesque church from 1442, was dilapidated and too small for the growing community.
The architect Theodor Quentin (1851–1905) from Pirna designed this neo-Gothic building, but he did not live to see its completion. On July 23, 1905, the building was inaugurated on the day of the 25th anniversary of the reign of Prince Karl Günther von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen , at whose consecration service the Prince himself attended.
architecture
The church is made from limestone and red sandstone from the region. The interior impresses with its relative simplicity. The painted groin vault , which consists of wire drawing and plaster , is supported by two massive pillars and the strong outer walls, which stand on a 70 cm thick concrete foundation. In the nave there are flower and leaf ornaments on the capitals and stalls . Opposite the wooden pulpit there is an angel figure with a Schwarzburg coat of arms to commemorate the prince's anniversary. In the chancel, three lead-glazed pointed arched windows with scenes from the New Testament provide sufficient light and in addition they appear to the viewer as images of a large three-winged altar .
It is also noteworthy that a few years earlier Theodor Quentin had built a church in Hörnitz (Upper Lusatia) , which is to be seen as the architectural model of the St. Matthias Church. In addition to the striking similarities (the portal, the proportions of the building, the parapet of the balcony below the bell room ...), differences are also noticeable. The clearest is the use of regional building materials and the large rosette between the portal and the balcony. Some other differences, such as the less pointed roofs over the side entrances to the left and right of the main portal in Hörnitz, turn out to be a subsequent change when looking at the history of the Hörnitz church.
Furnishing
organ
The first organ of St. Matthias Church in Stockhausen, built in 1904/05, was built by Reinhold and Adolph Strobel from Frankenhausen am Kyffhäuser (Bad Frankenhausen since 1927) in a case from Nothnagel / Stadtilm (II + P, 18 Reg.). The pneumatic instrument was played on the side (console on the north side of the organ). In 1991 a new, fully mechanical movement (II + P, 25 Reg.) Was installed in the original, neo-Gothic case by the company Böhm / Gotha. In 2015 there was a cleaning and general overhaul by the company "B. Kutter - Thüringer Orgelbau ”, in the course of which some optimizations such as new construction of upper grids for the bell of the central position of the trumpet in the main work as well as cranked bell of the trombone in the pedal were made.
