Hörnitz Church
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hörnitz is located in the Hörnitz district of the municipality of Bertsdorf-Hörnitz in the district of Görlitz , Saxony . It is a branch church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish Großschönau.

The church is located northwest of Althörnitz Castle in indented buildings next to the former Gasthof Stadt Zittau on the north side of Zittauer Straße in Hörnitz.

The neo-Gothic brick building with a 50-meter-high church tower with a clock and portal on the south side is surrounded by a small park, in the southeast part of which is the rectory. The interior of the church is characterized by a rich wood design. The organ , consisting of 1500 pipes , comes from the workshop of A. Schuster & Sohn in Zittau.
In a line in front of the main entrance there is a sandstone memorial for those who died in the First World War .
history
The parishes of Neu- and Althörnitz were parish off to Zittau until the end of the 19th century . In 1899 the decision was made to form a parish in Althörnitz.
Between 1900 and 1901 the church was built according to the project by Theodor Quentin . The church was consecrated on September 30, 1901. Until the connection to the power supply, the two chandeliers were equipped with candles and were lowered to light. The bells were rung with ropes and the tower clock was raised every two days with weights. Likewise, playing the organ was only possible by pressing the foot pedals for the bellows. These mechanical devices, which are no longer in use today, have all been preserved.
The church was renovated in the 1980s. The Schuster organ was completely overhauled in 1999, the prospect pipes that had been missing since the First World War were replaced and rededicated on September 26th.
Since the merger of the parishes of Hörnitz, Großschönau- Waltersdorf and Hainewalde to form the parish of Großschönau on January 1, 2014, the Hörnitz church has been a branch church of the parish of Großschönau. The entrance on the west side was prepared for wheelchair users in November 2014.
