The Abilene Regional Airport is the commercial airport in the city of Abilene in the US state of Texas . Dallas / Fort Worth is currently the only airport served by Abilene. It is the home airport of the charter airline Abilene Aero .

history

American Airlines started operating in the 1930s . The airport was a stopover from Dallas to Los Angeles . Later the airline stopped operating in Abilene for the time being.

Pioneer Airlines served many regional destinations in the 1940s and 1950s. For example Dallas Love Field , Houston Hobby Airport , Albuquerque , Fort Worth , Amarillo, and Lubbock . After Pioneer Airlines was merged into Continental Airlines , Abilene continued to operate until 1964.

From the 1960s, the Abilene Regional Airport was served by Trans-Texas Airways , which in 1970 offered four flights a day to Dallas. Other destinations in Texas and New Mexico were also served. At the beginning of the 1980s, the airline , now renamed Texas International , stopped operating in Abilene and there were no scheduled flights from Abilene until 1984.

Chaparral Airlines was an airline based in Abilene and existed from 1979 to the 1980s. She flew to Dallas Love Field , Dallas / Fort Worth , Houston Hobby Airport , Austin, and San Antonio .

From 1984 to spring 1985 Frontier Airlines (1950–1986) flew from Abilene Regional Airport to Denver via Midland / Odessa with the Boeing 737-200 aircraft .

After another break in scheduled flights, American Eagle , the regional airline of American Airlines , flies several times a day to Dallas / Fort Worth today .

For several years, Abilene Airport has also been used as an aircraft graveyard , where aircraft are parked during temporary shutdowns or are cannibalized and recycled. Around 20 decommissioned Saab 340 regional aircraft of the American Eagle were parked here.

Terrain and planes

Today, the Abilene Regional Airport has three runways of asphalt , while there were 1,952 four runways.

There have already been several renovations and renovations at the airport. For example, the parking space was increased to 731 spaces and a new tower was built between 2010 and 2012. At 40 meters, it is now twice as high as the previous tower from 1959.

There are 98 aircraft at Abilene Regional Airport. Half of the aircraft taking off are scheduled flights , while 32% of the aircraft taking off are military aircraft and 18% are air taxis .
