The Phoenix Goodyear Airport ( ICAO code : KGYR , IATA code : GYR , FAA code: GYR ) is an airport in the city of Goodyear in Maricopa County in the US state of Arizona .
history
The airport was first opened as Naval Air Facility (NAF) Litchfield Park in the 1940s and later referred to as Naval Air Station Litchfield Park after an expansion . After the end of World War II, the military airfield was mainly used for redundant or obsolete aircraft from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. In 1968 this task was handed over to today's 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (also AMARG; formerly AMARC and MASDC) in Tucson and Goodyear continued to be operated as a civil airfield by the city of Phoenix .
Several flight schools are now stationed at the airport, including since 1970 the Airline Training Center Arizona of Lufthansa that there along with the air force most of the flight instruction performs its pilots.
Since the 1990s, Goodyear has been increasingly used as a parking space for commercial aircraft that have been parked for a long time , now also as an aircraft graveyard for scrapping.
