Ryan M. Johnson (* 14. June 1976 in Thunder Bay , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and current - functionary . The center played over 700 games in the National Hockey League between 1997 and 2011 , playing for the Florida Panthers , Tampa Bay Lightning , St. Louis Blues , Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks . He has been in the management of the Vancouver Canucks since 2013 and has also been General Manager of theUtica Comets in the American Hockey League . Johnson's older brother Greg was also a professional ice hockey player in the NHL.
Career
The 1.85 m tall center began his career on the University of North Dakota team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's game operations before being selected in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft in 36th place in the second round of the Panthers.
During the 1995/96 season he moved from college to Team Canada . The 1996/97 season he spent on the farm team of the Panthers, the Carolina Monarchs , in the American Hockey League (AHL). After two more seasons, which he had mainly spent in the AHL, Johnson was able to fight for a regular place with the Panthers at the beginning of the 1999/2000 season . Shortly before the trade deadline in March 2000, he was finally swapped for Mike Sillinger from the Tampa Bay Lightning . After a full season with the Lightning, he returned to the Panthers - this time Václav Prospal went in exchange for the Lightning. Shortly before the end of the 2002/03 season , he was put on the panthers' waiver list and signed by the St. Louis Blues . After more than four years in St. Louis, he moved to Vancouver as a free agent in 2008 .
In December 2010 he was signed up for a try-out by the Rockford IceHogs . A few days later, Johnson was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks , for whom he played regularly until the end of the 2010/11 season. In the fall of 2011, he completed a try-out with the Detroit Red Wings , but then received no contract and subsequently ended his active career.
He has been in the management of the Vancouver Canucks since 2013, where he took over the position of Director of Player Development in 2015 . He has also been the General Manager of their farm team, the Utica Comets , in the AHL since 2017 .
