Denis Ramón Caniza Acuña (born August 29, 1974 in Bella Vista Norte ) is a retired Paraguayan football player .
He played 100 international matches for the Paraguayan national soccer team and took part in four soccer world championships from 1998 to 2010 .
Club career
The defender spent most of his career with various Paraguayan and Mexican clubs. At his first club, Club Olimpia from Asunción , he won four national championships in six seasons until 1999. He was then under contract from 1999 to 2001 with the Argentine CA Lanús . Between 2001 and 2012 Caniza played for a long time in Mexico, with a total of five different clubs in the Mexican first and second leagues , including the first division clubs Santos Laguna , CD Cruz Azul and Atlas Guadalajara . In between he returned to his homeland and won two more championships with Nacional Asunción in 2009 and 2011. Caniza also spent the last three years of his career in Paraguay and ended his career at Club Rubio Ñú in 2014 .
National team
Caniza, who was a fixture in the national team due to his versatility as a defender (both left and central), completed 100 international matches in the period from 1996 to 2010, in which he was able to score. He was a member of Paraguay's World Cup squad during the 1998 , 2002 , 2006 and 2010 World Cups . From 1998 to 2006 he was in all Paraguayan World Cup games. After the preliminary round at the 2006 World Cup, he initially announced his resignation from the national team after 77 international matches, but returned to the national team in 2007. At the 2010 World Cup, in which his team achieved the best result in Paraguay at a world championship with the quarter-finals, Caniza only played in the last group game against New Zealand. After two more friendly matches shortly after the tournament, he ended his career in the national team. In addition to the World Championships, he also took part in the Copa América in 1999 and 2001 .
Caniza is the first Paraguayan to have played at four World Cups and is also the record-breaking Paraguayan World Cup player with twelve games together with Roque Santa Cruz . After Carlos Gamarra he was the second Paraguayan with 100 internationals .
