The flag of Kurdistan or Ala Rengîn is the national flag of the Kurdish people and is recognized as such in all regions of their home area. The name Ala Rengîn means "colored flag" in German. The flag, in similar forms, was the official state flag of the Republic of Ararat and the Republic of Mahabad . Today it is the official emblem and symbol of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in Iraq .

The national flag of Kurdistan is a tricolor with an aspect ratio of 3: 5, made up of three horizontal stripes of equal size in red, white and green and a yellow sun in the center. The sun has 21 rays.

history

The current flag was first used by the Society for the Rise of Kurdistan in the Paris Peace Talks, right after the First World War . After the Kurdish state did not materialize, the flag was then used by the Xoybûn (Khoyboon) organization in the 1920s , during the Kurdish attempts to gain independence from the Ottoman Empire or the newly formed Turkey.

In the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan , the flag is now the official emblem and symbol of the parastatal entity.

Historical flags

Kingdom of Kurdistan

The flag of the Kingdom of Kurdistan (1922–1924), which Mahmud Barzanji had proclaimed in northern Iraq, had no national background, but rather a religious one, even though the state itself arose from the national idea of the Kurds. It is composed of a crescent moon in a red circle on a green background. The Kurdish King Mahmud Barzanji was a clergyman of the Naqschbandi order before he took office as king . Because of this, the flag included the crescent moon as well as the green color of Islam.

Republic of Ararat

An earlier version was used in the Republic of Ararat , Turkey, during the period 1927-1931. This version of the Kurdish flag was made up of the colors red, white and green from top to bottom. The sun had a slightly darker yellow color than that of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region today.

Republic of Mahabad

A red-white-green tricolor was also used in the short-lived republic of Mahabad , backed by the Soviet Union . In the middle of it was the coat of arms of the republic with a shining sun, a fountain pen and a wreath of ears of corn .

In the national flag of Iraq between 1959 and 1963, the Kurds were symbolically represented by the yellow sun in the center. But the yellow of the Kurds disappeared from the flag in the next version. The 2004 proposal for the Iraqi national flag again featured a yellow stripe for the Kurds, but the proposal did not succeed. Neither were various suggestions from 2008.
