2010 World Women's Squash Championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 26th women's squash world championship took place from September 15-22 , 2010 in Sharm El-Sheikh , Egypt . The World Cup, which was held for the first time on the African continent, was the most highly endowed tournament on the WSA World Tour 2010/11 .

Defending champion was Nicol David , who won the title again this year. In the final she defeated Omneya Abdel Kawy 11: 5, 11: 8 and 11: 6, which she won her fifth world title. This equalized the record of Sarah Fitz-Gerald , who was also world champion five times between 1996 and 2002. Already on the way to the final Nicol David prevailed against Farah Abdel Meguid , Raneem El Weleily , Low Wee Wern and Alison Waters without losing a set . Natalie Grinham , who had reached the final last year, was eliminated in the first round with 2: 3 against Low Wee Wern. Omneya Abdel Kawy, who was the first Egyptian to reach the World Championship final, defeated Tania Bailey , Jaclyn Hawkes , Kasey Brown and Camille Serme in the preliminary rounds . Serme was the first French woman to reach the semi-finals of a world championship.

The only German participant, Sina Wall , was eliminated in the second round of qualification. She was defeated by Annelize Naudé in four sentences. There were no participants from Switzerland or Austria.

The field of participants consisted of 32 players, eight of which were starting places for qualifiers. A wildcard was not awarded. Due to the last minute cancellation by Rachael Grinham one day before the start of the tournament, several players moved up in the seeding list, the resulting free place in the main field was not given to a lucky loser . Jenny Duncalf , who was seeded in second position , therefore received a bye into the second round.
