The hall, which is located in the eastern area of the campus with the other sports facilities at the university, belongs to the OSU Athletics Center, which opened at the end of 2000. The building is directly linked to the Boone Pickens Stadium, which can hold 60,000 spectators , and replaces a fourth grandstand on the east side of the stadium. It can be reached via Interstate 35 and Oklahoma State Highway 51 . It is at the intersection of Western Hall of Fame Avenue and Knoblock Street.

The stadium currently has around 13,600 seats, including boxes in the west stand. The capacity for games of the women's team and for wrestling matches is significantly lower as parts of the grandstands are not made available.

There is a video screen about eight by ten meters that was installed in 2013. The hall floor is made of hardwood - hardwood and was named after Eddie Sutton , named, a longtime basketball coach at the University. It was relocated in 1938 and has not been replaced since.

history

Construction of the hall, initially called the 4-H Club and Student Activity Building , began in February 1938. The name explained itself in the financing by a fund of the organization 4H . The stadium should serve the university as a multi-purpose hall and offer space for around 8,000 spectators.

The opening game took place on December 9, 1938 against the University of Kansas . The following year the first wrestling event took place. In honor of wrestling coach Edward Gallagher , the hall was renamed Gallagher Hall at the beginning of 1939 .

In 1987 the stadium was renovated at a cost of US $ 3.8 million; the capacity was reduced to about 6,400. In addition, the surname of long-time basketball coach Henry Iba was added to the stadium name. Since then this has been called the Gallagher-Iba Arena .

In 2001 the capacity of the hall was more than doubled by raising its roof, so that up to 13,611 spectators can now watch the games. In the first few years the games were still well attended. In the meantime, the US $ 56 million measures are viewed more critically, as the stadium is usually only half full.

Other events

In March 2001 Margaret Thatcher , the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, gave a speech at the stadium.
