Stadium description and location

The south exit from the outside

The stadium is located in the eastern part of the university campus on Western Hall of Fame Avenue. This can be reached via Interstate 35 and Oklahoma State Highway 51 . The city will provide free parking spaces and shuttle buses on match days.

The square has a size of about 7,000 square meters. The surface is artificial turf from the AstroTurf brand .

The approximately 60,000 spectator seats are located on the south, north and west sides of the stadium. Instead of a fourth grandstand, there is the Athletics Center on the east side of the arena, which also includes the Gallagher-Iba Arena , the university’s basketball hall. There are also fitness rooms, other sports halls, an advice center and a museum. The $ 55 million complex opened in 2000.

history

The stadium as a sports facility

The OSU football team was founded in 1901. Initially, only simple sports fields were available to her, which were named Lewis Field in honor of Dean Lowery Layman Lewis from the 1913/14 season . In 1919, construction of the stadium began at its current location - in the northeast of the campus. The stands of the stadium, which initially held 8,000 spectators, were still made of wood.

Construction work on the stadium

In the years that followed, the arena was expanded several times. In 1924 steel and concrete stands were installed. Renovation work during the 1929/30 season allowed the capacity to be increased to 13,000 places.

After expansions in the late 1940s, there was space for around 39,000 spectators around 1950. With the removal of the cinder track that surrounds the playing field and the associated lowering of the sports field, the capacity could be increased again in 1971. At the same time, artificial turf was laid for the first time.

In 2003 the stadium got its current name, which it owes to T. Boone Pickens , a patron of the university. He was responsible for donating US $ 165 million to the sports department in 2005, which set a record. Further renovations were completed in 2009. Since then, the capacity has been 60,218. During a game against the team from Baylor University from Waco, the stadium was sold out for the first time in 2013.

Other events

Three US Presidents delivered speeches at the stadium: Richard Nixon in 1970, George HW Bush in 1990 and his son George W. Bush in 2006.
